On March 21, 2011 Tom Torlakson, the State Superintendent of Public Instruction, stated, "Schools face the daunting challenge of up to 4.5 billion in additional cuts if tax extensions are not placed on the ballot by the Legislature and approved by voters in June. This would be devastating to an education system that has already sustained $18 billion in state funding cuts over the last three - a loss of one-third of the annual budget for schools."

Today we know that the Legislature DID NOT take action to place the proposed tax extensions on the June ballot and our district is going to have to make severe cuts. Cuts will be made and may mean:

• fewer teachers and support staff (teachers, aides, specialist, maintenance, and custodial staff)
• increased class sizes
• less access to support services for reading, ELL, counseling
• reduced music, library and P.E. programming
• and thousands of dollars of District financial support taken away from our schools: school supplies, educational programs, books

BCE has joined with the PTA's of all schools to launch GAME ON BURLINGAME! - a fundraising and advocacy campaign to maintain District-wide educational excellence currently at great risk. Our goal for the next two months is to:

1. raise $500,000 to bridge the funding gap created by the State budget crisis, and
2. raise our voices to tell Sacramento it is time to invest in, not cut education.
